An Update

First things first, there are a couple of new things on the sidebar.

So, I haven’t blogged in almost 6 months. And?

I thought I best write something here. What with Facebook taking over and becoming far too obsessive for my liking, I just haven’t been bothered to blog. That’s all really.

I have no idea what I’m going to say here, but we’ll see I guess.

Hmmm, recent news:

  • I may be moving house very soon. Most of you already know this, but it seems things are moving forward nicely.

  • I am having an alcohol-free week thanks to me going out Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week. I need to stop spending money and start revising!

  • It’s now less than a month until Muse at Wembley Stadium. This is a good thing. Apparently there will be a small orchestra on stage for the gig, which will be fantastic for songs such as Butterflies and Hurricanes and Blackout. I’m really looking forward to it!

  • My music taste has changed somewhat since coming to Uni. I’m still a big fan of Dragonforce, Metallica etc. But my favourite bands at the moment are Muse, Nightwish, Reuben, Biffy Clyro, Sevenfold and probably Rammstein. Now I know that you’re all going to hang me for Biffy Clyro, but many of my friends here like them, and I have now joined them. What ever you say can not change that. In my own humble opinion they are good. Nuff said.

  • Had a couple of exams in January. One went very well and the other went not so well. We’ll see I guess. The rest of my exams begin on 7th June and end on 14th June – just in time to come home on the 15th and go to Muse on the 16th. Nicely timed by the university I feel. Once they are finished, I have two weeks of nothing. I have to be at the university on 29th June to receive my results, so the Ubersummer will not commence until then!

  • I have a radio show on ((URY)) – University Radio York. It’s called “Off The Cuff” and all the info you want can be found on the Facebook group called “Off The Cuff”.

  • Unfortunately, the day you have planned for Thorpe Park is the day I return up north from Muse. Shame really, although I probably can’t afford it right now. Never mind.

  • I’m running out of things to write, so I hope you appreciate the effort.

I’ll try to post more; promise.

See you all soon

Oh, I was going to post a photo, but they're all on Facebook!

So, here’s a proper post with some pictures, and most importantly, some news of what’s going on up north.

There’ll be plenty of photos for you to admire. For those of you in the Facebook know, there are many more on my profile page. You’ve probably seen all of these before but, I’m going to post them here anyway - hopefully with a bit of explanation as well.

So, where do I live? You’ve hopefully all looked at the video of my room, but where is the room? It’s here:

House A, St. Lawrence Court, Halifax College

There’s 9 of us sharing. There should be ten of us, but there is an empty room opposite me on the top floor. You can see my window at the top left of the house. There are twenty six houses in St. Lawrence Court, named A to Z. Halifax is made up of six courts, I think, but all the others are rubbish so I don’t know the names of them.

York’s campus can look quite nice, depending on whether or not it is dark. It’s much better at night. But, for the purpose of clarity, I’ve taken these photos during the day, just for you. Now isn’t that nice?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is central hall. The wonderful looking building where I get to graduate. Great isn’t it?

Some of the campus is quite picturesque. Such as this view over by Derwent College:

You can see Heslington Hall off in the distance.

Here is Heslington Hall with some random sculpted tree.

Ah, the most important building on campus – The Physics Tower (of Power)! We have nearly all of our lectures in there. Our labs are also in there, second floor I think.

Only one more of campus. Hope you’re not bored yet.

This is a view towards the Biology (not as good as Physics) building across the lake. This is a rare view of campus, as there is no concrete.

So, there was campus.

Moving on, the campus is about a ten minute bus ride from the town centre. The town is quite small, but big enough to have all the main shops, and a Games Workshop. Oh dear, oh dear. This photo was taken down by the River Ouse.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It’s not quite as big as the Thames, but it’s better than a canal.

I’m rather happy at the severe lack of chavs up here compared with home. There are still obviously people up for a laugh, as this photo shows:

Washing-up liquid in the fountain - well worth it.

And finally of town, the city’s most famous building, The Minster:

This place is massive. We haven’t been inside yet, because they charge you a fiver.

Oh, almost forgot. This is the remains of the castle in York. It’s called Clifford’s Tower and looks much better when lit up at night:

At the end of week 2, 21st October, we had FRESH – basically the fresher’s ball, but not as formal. We all dressed up kind of smart:

In the above photo you have Ben in the beige coat. He lives in house E. At the back are Catherine and James, both of whom live with me, and some chap in a hat.

This was at Fresh just before the Vengaboys came on stage. They were so bad at miming it was unbelievable.

A couple of weeks ago was the Pirates vs Ninjas night at JJ’s, the bar in Halifax.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

A wonderful group photo, with the Burgundy Ninja appearing at the back. Almost everybody else were boring pirates. I decided to be different.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Ah, the “not at all intoxicated by alcohol" Burgundy Ninja. This was at a local park, on one of the stupid little horses on a spring. I was evidently too big for it.

Ah, Halloween. Everybody dressed up. Nobody dressed up as much as Ben:

Bonfire night was a bit of a disaster really. We attempted to find a fireworks display, and failed miserably. This then led to us going to the pub and playing with…

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Sparklers! I love the really long shutter motion of my camera.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is me and Laura at “Toff’s”, one of the nightclubs in town. She’s form house E, along with Ben and a few other who we are all really good friends with. Laura and James have a bit of a thing going on, so I’m surprised he’s not in the photo as well.

This was taken on Thursday night at another nightclub called Gallery.

It’s Nick and Claire who, is on my course but lives on Nick’s corridor.

I don’t know why, but it seems the north have better sunsets than us:

I'm in York!

Hurrah, I’m in York. I thought while I have a spare moment, I will update all my faithful readers as to how my new life is going.

So far, I’ve only been here for three nights, and there have been three fantastic house parties. I’ve also been to a nightclub for the first time which I thought was brilliant. It’s just a shame that I can’t dance that well…

I share a house in St. Lawrence Court, Halifax College with eight other people; four guys and four girls. On the top floor in the skylight rooms we have James, Adam and I. There is also a spare room, a toilet and a shower. On the middle floor are the four girls: Catharine, Susie, Kim and Sharon who is from Hong Kong. The bottom floor has the kitchen and the two Chinese guys, Ke and Parker. Fortunately we all like the same sort of music, which is great. Nobody likes crappy rapping, Hip-Hop shite.

Tonight is the beach Party at our local bar, JJ’s. Should be good fun, if not a little cold. I had a talk from the physics department this morning, who say that I have a 2 hour 45 minute maths test on Thursday. Fun eh?

There is plenty going on on campus all week. We’re off into town on Thursday night with our STYCs. I don’t know what it stands for, but they are our second year mentor people. Should be another late one.

Fortunately I have got the internet working. Cost me sixty pounds for a year, but well worth it methinks.

One final thing. My housemates and I have created a new sport. Well, it’s not new, but we’re going to start a society with it. It’s all about chair racing. Not just any old chair racing. Oh no, this is hard core serious racing. No wheels allowed by the way before you get any wise-guy ideas. You basically hop along on the chairs, but we have all terrain events as well. It’s not for whimps.

We did think this up at 0500 one morning, so don’t blame me if it sounds crap. It really is good fun. When you’re drunk.

I’ll post some photos when I have them.

Ciao for now.

Dane

P.S. Happy birthday Dave for today and Lewis for last week.

Weather: Cloudy, Misty, 8 C
Reading: Bundles of literature from the department
Listening to: She is my sin (live) - Nightwish
Watching: Nothing. I have no TV. I miss it.
Thinking of buying: More text books. I need at least two more.
Looking Forward to: Muse in November
Confused about: How my radiator works
Annoyed with: The rain waking me up this morning
Mood: Happy but tired
